SA Recycling has expanded its operations in Arizona with the addition of a new recycling yard in Glendale previously owned by Southwest Metals.
“Southwest Metals still exists,” an SA Recycling spokesperson clarified. “They still operate a large non-ferrous and wire-chopping operation in Phoenix. We didn’t acquire that facility. We only purchased their ferrous yard on 55th Avenue, which also includes some non-ferrous business.”
The spokesperson emphasized that Southwest Metals continues operations under the original ownership, retaining their management and non-ferrous business activities elsewhere in Phoenix and Glendale.
“The previous management will continue to run Southwest Metals because we didn’t buy the corporation, just this specific yard,” the spokesperson added.
The acquisition closed on Friday March 14, and SA Recycling reopened the Glendale yard for business on Monday March 17. Existing employees at the Glendale location have joined SA Recycling as part of the acquisition.
The Glendale facility operates a small aluminum shredder, which SA Recycling will continue using, but does not have a ferrous shredder, making it primarily a large feeder and processing yard.
SA Recycling, based in Orange, California, now operates nine locations in Arizona, including four yards in Phoenix, two in Tucson and one each in Mesa, Yuma and Glendale. The Glendale yard is strategically positioned closest to the company’s existing Phoenix operations.
The Glendale facility is approximately 30 miles northwest of CMC Steel Arizona’s operations in Mesa, which operates an electric arc furnace (EAF) producing bar products. Additionally, Nucor Steel is constructing a new meltshop in Kingman, about 170 miles to the northwest, which is expected to produce 600,000 tons annually upon completion.
SA Recycling operates shredders in Las Vegas, Phoenix and Tucson, further supporting its recycling and metal-processing capabilities across the region.
This latest expansion follows SA Recycling’s acquisition of five additional recycling locations in Georgia in November 2024.
